2012 State Class AA Champions
The Simley Spartans won their fifth consecutive State Class AA Team Wrestling Championship. For the second year in a row, Simley defeated Scott West 36-22 in the championship match. Simley defeated Milaca/Faith Christian in the quarterfinals 44-17; and Kasson-Mantorville in the semifinals 47-20 to advance to the championship match. Simley finished the season with a dual meet record of 29-3.

Mark Madigan Named National Assistant Coach of the Year
The National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Assistant Coach of the Year goes to Mark Madigan of Simley High School in Minnesota. He has been coaching for 31 years. This year he helped to guide the Simley Spartans to the fifth straight Class AA State Championship. He has helped to coach seven state finalist and five state champions.
"Longevity is a great attribute to a truly dedicated assistant coach. I commend Coach Madigan on his years of dedication to the sport of wrestling and his continued service to helping build a program and to teach these young student-athletes," said Moyer.
Coach Mark Madigan Named Assistant Head Coach of the Year
Simley Assistant Coach Mark Madigan has been honored as National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Regional Scholastic Assistand Head Coach of the Year.
2011-2012 NWCA Region 5 (Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota) Scholastic Award Winners:
- Scholastic Wrestler of The Year: Brandon Kingsley, Apple Valley, Minnesota
- Scholastic Assistant Head Coach of the Year: Mark Madigan, Simley High School, Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota
- Scholastic Head Coach of The Year: Mike Hagerty, Blue Springs, Missouri
Regional award winners will be nominated for consideration for the 2011-2012 NWCA Scholastic National Awards.
Coach Will Short Named Coach of the Year
The Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association (MWCA) selected Will Short of Simley as State Head Coach of the Year. Selected as State Assistant Coach of the Year was John Droubie of Cambridge-Isanti.
Will Short and John Droubie, along with MWCA Mr. Minnesota of Wrestling selection Michael Kroells of Scott West and Brandon Kingsley of Apple Valley represent Minnesota as The National Wrestling Coaches Association's State (NWCA) award winners, which qualified them for further NWCA honors at the Regional and National levels.
Not Short On TitlesJake Short is the newly crowned king of Minnesota's First Family of Wrestling.
The Simley junior won an individual state championship for the third consecutive season when he pinned Tim Ostby of Morris/Hancock/Chokio-Alberta in the second period of the Class 2A 145-pound championship match Saturday night at the Xcel Energy Center.
Short is the first person in Minnesota's most decorated wrestling family to win three individual titles.

Gliva and Wanzek named to MWCA All-State Academic Wrestling Team
This is the first time in school history that Simley has had two wrestlers receive this award in the same year.
Nick and Kyle will receive their awards at the state high school tournament this weekend.

Simley Wrestling Team Named Team Academic All StateThe Simley wrestling team has been named Team Academic All State. Simley will be receiving the highest honor, which is the "Gold" award, from the Minnesota High School Wrestling Coaches Association. The Simley wrestling section team GPA is currently at 3.52. Congratulations to all the Simley wrestlers.
Simley Wins Section 4AA Team ChampionshipSimley won the Section 4AA team championship on Saturday. Simley defeated Minnehaha Academy/DeLaSalle 84-0 in the quarterfinals. Simley defeated St. Paul Harding 77-0 in the semifinals. Simley defeated South St. Paul 75-0 in the championship.
The team portion of the State Tournament is Thursday, March 1st at Excel Energy Center.
One-on-One with Will Short
Will Short was a two-time state champion at Simley before going on to earn All-American honors at the University of Minnesota. He has amassed over 300 career dual meet victories as a head coach, and guided the Spartans to state championships in each of the past four seasons. Simley is currently ranked No. 1 in the state (Class AA) and No. 8 nationally in the InterMat Fab 50.
