St. Cloud, Minn. - St. Cloud State University head wrestling coach Steve Costanzo announced the signing of Mic Berg of Simley High School to a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Huskies during the 2009-10 season.
"Mic is an outstanding addition to our team," said Costanzo. "He is an outstanding student-athlete that will make an immediate impact on the Husky wrestling program. Mic has proven himself on the national stage and has aspirations of becoming a national champion."
Berg is projected to compete at the 184-pound or 197-pound weight classes. He is a past Minnesota High School state place winner and has achieved All-America honors in freestyle wrestling, where he finished as a runner-up at the 2007 USA Wrestling Cadet Nationals. Berg is 69-14 the past two seasons while leading Simley High School to the 2008 Minnesota High School League state wrestling championship. He is currently ranked as the 24th recruit in the country in his respective weight class by Wrestling USA Magazine.
Berg is the son of Mark and Colleen Berg residing in Inver Grove Heights. He is currently undecided with a major.
The Huskies compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, and they are an NCAA Division II affiliate. Under the leadership of Costanzo, who begins his third season at SCSU in 2008-08, the Huskies posted an impressive 13-2 dual match record in 2007-08. SCSU also placed 12th in the nation as a team at the 2008 NCAA Division II championships.
Mic entered the Senior Nationals Tournament at 189 lbs, there were 58 wrestlers in his weight class. Mic beat Paul Ardila (Georgia) in the first round 8-4. In the second round Mic beat Miles Nixon (Wyoming) 10-7. In the third round Mic beat Reid Chivers (Washington) 9-4, this win put Mic in the quaterfinals. Mic would beat Christain Boley(New York) 5-2 to qualify for the semi-finals. Mic would lose in the semi-finals to the eventual national champion from Virginia Derrick Borlie 10-0. Mic would then lose in the consolation semi-finals to Boaz Beard (Kansas) 5-1. Mic's 5th place match was against Samuel Kuntz (Georgia). Mic won 4-3 in overtime. Mic finished 5-2 and 5th place in the nation.
Mic has signed a letter of intent to wrestle at St. Cloud State University. Congratulations to Mic Berg on an outstanding senior season.
